The English edition of Lenka Dolanová's book about Steina and Woody Vašulka, A Dialogue with the Demons of the Tools: Steina and Woody Vašulka, is published ten years after the original Czech version (Prague: NAMU and JSAF / International Documentary Film Festival, 2011). It is a revised version of the publication in graphic design by Martin Odehnal, which was published by the Vašulka Kitchen Brno with the aim of introducing the Vašulka's work to an international audience.

The book launch will be attended by its author, art historian and curator Lenka Dolanová and her colleagues who participated on the book. The launch will be accompanied by an exhibition opening and a concert by artist Gijs Gieskes.

With a set on the GameBoy, Gijs Gieskes will recall the chiptune scene that peaked around 2007, when the documentary Reformat the planet was made and the Blip fest in New York took place. Ondřej Merta will dust off the cartridges from the noughties.

The new English edition of Lenka Dolanová's book about Steina and Woody Vašulka, A Dialogue with the Demons of the Tools: Steina and Woody Vašulka, is published ten years after the original Czech version (Prague: NAMU and JSAF / International Documentary Film Festival, 2011). It is a revised version of the publication, with graphic design by Martin Odehnal, which was published by the Vasulka Kitchen Brno in order to introduce the Vasulka's work to a wider international audience. The publication Dialogue with the Demons of Instruments - Steina and Woody Vasulka is the only monographic publication to date that evaluates the work of these two artists, who significantly influenced the beginnings of video art and the development of electronic art.

Despite the undeniable contribution of Steina and Woody Vasulka to the art of electronic media, their work has not yet been sufficiently appreciated in a global context. The English translation of a revised and expanded version of the book by Lenka Dolanová, who dedicated her doctoral thesis at FAMU to their work, will introduce their art and life to an international audience for the first time in a comprehensive way. The book has been expanded with a new introduction by Tomáš Ruller, and the text has been revised and expanded to include additional chapters dealing with the duo's work over the last ten years and their work with the Vasulka archives and the restoration of Woody Vasulka's installations. The publication is supplemented by a complete inventory of the Vasulka's works and a list of exhibitions, and also includes a selection of Woody Vasulka's poetry. The book has a rich photographic appendix.

Annotation to the Czech edition (NAMU and JSAF / International Documentary Film Festival, 2011)

Steina a Woody Vasulkovi patří k nejvýraznějším průzkumníkům elektronických audiovizuálních světů umění. Vztah k nástrojům, podomácku vytvářeným, a přitom komplexním, byl pro ně od počátku zásadní; sdílejí s nimi svůj život v ateliérech od New Yorku až po Santa Fe. Místem jejich prvního setkání byla kolej studentů pražské Akademie múzických umění v Hradební ulici a prvním strojem, o němž diskutovali, Steinin moped. Steina se narodila v Rejkjavíku roku 1940, studovala housle a hudební teorii také na HAMU v Praze. Woody, o tři roky starší, jako Bohuslav Vašulka absolvoval katedru dokumentárního filmu na FAMU; pochází z Brna. V roce 1965 spolu emigrovali z tehdejšího Československa do Spojených států. Zde objevili video a brzy začali ohledávat jazyk elektronického média, s využitím oscilátorů, syntezátorů, kolorizérů, různých optických zařízení, procesorů či softwarů. Zabývali se vztahem obrazu a zvuku, přičemž si někdy prohazovali zkušenosti – Woody pracoval se zvukem, Steina s obrazem. Většinu z používaných nástrojů společně se spolupracovníky zkonstruovali či upravili. Klíčová je také jejich činnost organizační – založili divadlo elektronických médií The Kitchen, a působí jako kurátoři a archiváři. Několik let přednášeli na univerzitě v Buffalu, od osmdesátých let obývají adobe – ateliér v novomexickém Santa Fe.

Dílo Vasulkových ve svém celku vypovídá o vztahu umění, vědy a technologie, možnostech a limitech uměleckého výzkumu, roli umělců ve společnosti. Woody je více analytický, mechanik a sběratel kutil, Steinin přístup je hravější a intuitivnější, a v něčem i svobodnější. Woody se v posledních dvaceti letech věnuje robotickým systémům, Steina využívá především záběry islandských přírodních procesů ke komponování prostředí s vícekanálovým obrazem a zvukem.

Ve Woodyho instalacích jsou diváci podřízeni strojům (ty u něj mají nepochybně větší prostor), Steina nabízí pohlcující audiovizuální zkušenosti (umožňuje uvidět jinak neviditelné). Společně se svými ná/stroji neohroženě brázdí vlny nové (utopické) poetiky.
