(to replace with English) Archiv Vašulka Kitchen Brno je místem pro vzdělávání, sdílení a vlastní tvorby. Nabízí pro veřejnost – badatele, studenty, umělce a další zájemce – přístup k digitálnímu archivu a k mediatéce Woodyho a Steiny Vašulkových.

Vedle souboru 1 252 audiovizuálních děl Vašulkových archiv obsahuje rozsáhlý dokumentační materiál: eseje, fotografie, korespondenci, plánky, plakáty, programy, zvukové dokumenty a katalogy výstav. Vašulkovi je shromažďovali od začátku sedmdesátých let v rámci dokumentace vlastní tvorby i pro využití v širší komunitě newyorského prostoru The Electronic Kitchen, který v roce 1971 spoluzakládali. V obsahu je tak možné dohledat i práce jejich souputníků, umělců, jako jsou Peter Crown, David Dunn, Ralph Hocking, Sherry Miller, Phil Morton, Lynda Rodolitz, Jud Yalkut nebo Gene Youngblood.

Archiv umožňuje mapovat a reflektovat tvorbu Woodyho a Steiny Vašulkových i tvorby dalších umělců z oblasti umění videa a elektronických médií. V jeho rámci iniciujeme výzkumné projekty a navazujeme mezinárodní spolupráci s institucemi obdobného typu (audiovizuální archivy a výzkumná centra v oblasti umění elektronických médií). Podporujeme taky edukativní projekty o ochraně, péči a uchovávání audiovizuálních děl ve sbírkách a archivech.

Původní korpus archivu postupně rozšiřujeme o nové soubory audiovizuálních děl, teoretických textů, záznamů přednášek, fotografií a jiných materiálů, které byly získány, darovány nebo představeny v rámci našeho programu. Otevřený archiv je tedy chápaný jako dynamická platforma pro uchovávání a zprostředkování klasické i současné audiovizuální tvorby odborné i laické veřejnosti.

V současné chvíli je dokončeno odborné strukturované zpracování archivu čítající rozličné aktivity, od archivního výzkumu pod vedením Barbory Šedivé, Kateřiny Drajsajtlové a Jennifer DeFelice, výběru vhodné metodiky pro zpracování archivu, odborné konzultace s experty z Národního filmového archivu a jinými, výběr vhodné databáze a jejího testování, dokumentace po návrh na dobudování vhodného depozitu. Tento dlouhodobý projekt zastřešující jmenované aktivity probíhá za finanční podpory Ministerstva kultury České republiky.

A Navigational Tool for Traversing the Vašulka Mediascape

The Vasulka Kitchen Brno archive is a place for education, sharing, and self-creation. It offers the public - researchers, students, artists, and others - access to the digital archive and the Woody and Steina Vašulka media library.

In addition to a collection of 1,252 audiovisual artifacts by the Vasulkas, the archive contains extensive documentary material: essays, photographs, correspondence, plans, posters, programs, audio documents, and exhibition catalogs. The Vasulka's have been collecting these items since the early 1970s as part of the documentation of their own work and for use in the wider community of The Electronic Kitchen, the New York space they co-founded in 1971. The content also includes works by their contemporaries, artists such as Peter Crown, David Dunn, Ralph Hocking, Sherry Miller, Phil Morton, Lynda Rodolitz, Jud Yalkut, and Gene Youngblood.

At the moment, the work of professional and structured processing of the archive has been carried out, comprising various activities, from archival research under the guidance of Barbara Šedivá, Kateřina Drajsajtlová and Jennifer Helia DeFelice, the selection of an appropriate methodology for processing the archive, professional consultations with experts from the National Film Archive and others, the selection of an appropriate database and its testing, documentation, and a proposal for the completion of a suitable depository. This long-term project, which covers the above-mentioned activities, is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

The archive allows for the mapping and reflection of Woody and Steina Vasulka's work as well as the work of other artists in the field of video art and electronic media. Within its framework, we initiate research projects and establish international cooperation with institutions of a similar type (audiovisual archives and research centers in the field of electronic media art). We also support educational projects on the protection, care, and preservation of audiovisual works in collections and archives.

We are gradually expanding the original corpus of the archive with new collections of audiovisual works, theoretical texts, lecture recordings, photographs, and other materials acquired, donated, or presented in the framework of our program. The Open Archive is thus conceived as a dynamic platform for the preservation and communication of historic and contemporary audiovisual works to the professional and lay public.

The project Vašulka Kitchen Brno - Archive and Collection in 2024 makes available a representative overview of diverse video works by individuals and creative groups from the period of their activity during the 20 years of the existence of the Performance Studio (Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology) to the general public and provides a basis for further research and curatorial work.

This year, out of the approximately 150 items collected, VKB is publishing the works of more than 50 artists and creative groups, with a sample selection of several collective projects.

In the coming year we plan to make this database fully accessible and to add a selection of works from the period of the Video-Multimedia-Performance studio from the 1990s.
