Borders of experiment: Deux Nouvelles Erreurs + Totoabas
The May weather will finally allow us to test our concerts outdoors, i.e. in the courtyard of the House of the Lords of Kunštát, which will allow us to listen to the specificities of the space, the reflection of sound waves, the echoes and crosstalk of the flamboyant Brno parties. For this occasion, we will welcome two duos, one French and the other Czech, devoted to the fusion of acoustic instruments with electronics mainly in the context of free improvisation, which will merge at the end of the concert programme into one big electro-acoustic chimera. It is safe to assume that during the evening the courtyard will experience an extremely wide range of sounds, noises, melodies and timbres revealing its hidden essence and the possibilities of use that come from it.
Deux Nouvelles Erreurs
Peter Orins and Laurent Rigaut have been intertwining reeds and skins for ages in formations with variable line-ups, ranging from duos to big bands. Their sonic errors accumulate to carve out new paths in the thicket of improvised music. They never forget to recall that they come from an adventurous history rooted in diverse and fantastical musical landscapes. With each encounter, they seize the opportunity to enrich their baggage as instant instrumentalist/composers.
Peter Orins – percussions
Laurent Rigaut – alto and tenor saxophone, analog synths
Totoabas
After years of working together on the purely recording-based project Binaural Camping, where they had fun exploring and interpreting various types of acoustically interesting, industrial or sacred spaces on the basis of mutual player interaction, Zdeněk and Petr decided to follow up their binaural camping with a concert project. One of the impulses was given by, among other things, the meeting of two instruments of Scottish provenance in the inventory of both musicians: electronic modules of the Instruō brand and great Highland bagpipe. These were gradually accompanied by both players' favourite instruments: the trumpet in the case of Peter and Zdeněk's contralto clarinet.
The underlying theme of the Totoabas project is live modulation of acoustic wind instruments through Instruō modules, primarily Arbhar (granular processor) and Lúbadh (modded stereo looper). These modules are able to interact with the audio signal in a way that pushes them into the realm of a sophisticated musical instrument with an incredibly wide range of applications, the limits of which are only determined by the abilities of the player and the variations in how the modules are connected to each other. The project emphasizes structured and partially composed material, with layers of drones and repetitive rhythmic patterns that both musicians use to produce a pulsating musical matter. In this framework, an improvised dialogue between the two players then takes place.

Petr Vrba – modular synth, trumpet
