Composing with systems: searching for ultimate principles and losing control
Jiří Suchánek, an audiovisual artist, musician, multimedia experimenter and developer. His presentation will include installation demonstrations and commentaries on installation and development.
Jiří Suchánek will present following works:
- Atomtone software for sonification of atomic data
- Photone light interface, which uses light for sound control
- Random if random object - generating realtime composition
Jiří Suchánek (1979, Czech republic) is sound and media artist, musician and multimedia experimentalist focused in building permanent audio-light installations and systems that are usually interactive and placed in a natural or public spaces (like a cave, astronomic observatory, bridge...). His artistic approach is synthetic. In his works he is connecting sound, light, sculptural objects, electronics + code with carefully chosen spaces. Through his work he explores relationship between nature, data, technology and durability of the electronic media in a wild climatic situations. Jiří Suchánek is searching for alternative situations and places for presentation of media and sound art. The centre of his works is sound that is expanded or articulated by other media and unexpected social situations. Most of his installations deal with sonification of natural phenomena. He usually integrates natural processes and physical phenomena in his technological oriented works.
The latest project "Atom tone" was presented on several festivals and also at ICAD 2016 conference. Project Atom tone is focused on sonification of atomic spectral lines and live electroacoustic music made with this Max/msp based system. Jiří Suchánek developed several musical instruments (software + hardware) for his live electronic music performances.
Jiří Suchánek studied atelier video-multimedia-performance (Keiko Sei, Peter Ronai) at Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology (1999-2005). During studies he explored relationship between sound and image in the context of time (and later space). Few works were dedicated to developing own music interfaces. In 2005 he established audiovisual performance group "Mateřídouška" and performed on festivals around Eastern Europe (Unsound on Tour, Rokolektive, Stimul, Exposition of New Music etc.).
He attended several workshops, residencies and study fellowships – for example CTM MusicMakersHacklab 2014, Timet (Giardino Sonoro de la Limonaia), STEIM, Institute of Sonology (2017) or Magic Carpets project.
Since 2009 Jiří works as an assistant at Department of Audiovisual Technology at Faculty of Fine Arts Brno University of Technology where he teaches two subjects: Audio Technology and Sound Creation (History of sound-art and experimental music). Now he is Ph.D. candidate at Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts where he works on thesis “Sonification and Aesthetics of Data-mapping” and teaches subject “Physical computing – interactive systems”.
Some of his electronic installations are running more than 8 years in public space. His dream is to build an installation in the mountains that will survive for more than 500 years and will overgrown with moss and lichen.
